RTVE President José Pablo López maintains his confidence in 'La familia de la tele'. López defended the controversial format produced by the creators of 'Sálvame' despite its low ratings and opposition from some corporation employees. However, the head of the public broadcaster insists on his commitment to the afternoon slot on La 1, amidst the 'permanent attack' against the program, and requested 'time', as he explained, he believes it can improve in the near future.
During his appearance before the joint RTVE commission in Congress, José Pablo López addressed accusations from Sumar's spokesperson, Francisco Sierra, who was highly critical of 'La familia de la tele' for resembling 'Sálvame', the defunct Telecinco magazine, and not meeting 'quality standards'. 'It does not fulfill the public service function,' he insisted, highlighting the poor ratings and public rejection of this show, which has been airing since April 28. Yesterday, the magazine featuring Belén Esteban recorded a 6.6% and 5.7% share, half of La 1's monthly average.
López argued that he is building a channel 'for the social majority' at RTVE and highlighted La 1's ratings in May, closing the month with a 10.5% share, a one and a half point increase compared to the same period last year. In this regard, he explained that the public broadcaster cannot operate under the premise 'that interests private television and certain media groups' because 'there are many people interested in seeing TVE fail'. He also mentioned the trajectory of 'Mañaneros', which started two years ago with poor ratings but has reached its best historical records this month, nearing morning leadership, to justify keeping 'La familia de la tele' in La 1's schedule.
Regarding María Patiño's program, López requested 'time' and denounced that the show faces 'permanent attack due to interests that have absolutely nothing to do with public television'. The RTVE president assured that he is patient with the debut of formats and trusts that Osa Producciones' venture will take off. 'When I have a professional conviction that the program has reached its limit, rest assured that I will remove it from the schedule,' he warned, while emphasizing that La 1's slot is the 'second option' behind La 1, thanks to the boost from daily dramas 'La promesa' and 'Valle Salvaje'.
