Spanish roads recorded 99 fatalities in traffic accidents during May 2025, which is 8 more than in the same period last year. This increase occurs in a context of 3% growth in mobility, according to provisional data from the Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT).
So far this year, 432 people have died on the roads, 5 fewer than in the same period last year.
By autonomous communities, Andalusia is the region with the highest number of fatalities this May, with 27 deaths, and it also shows the greatest increase in road accidents. Conversely, Catalonia shows the largest reduction, with 7 fatalities, 7 fewer than in May 2024.
May was marked by an increase in accidents with multiple fatalities, including two incidents with three deaths each and another with four victims. By type of user, there is a notable increase in fatalities among car occupants (+7) and truck drivers (+7).
Run-off-road accidents remain the leading cause of death, accounting for 57 of the 99 fatalities, 23 more than in May 2024. In contrast, head-on collisions and pedestrian run-overs saw a decrease.
There is a significant increase in fatalities due to run-off-road accidents, with 57 deaths compared to 34 in the same period in 2024. Conversely, fatalities from head-on collisions decreased to 22, 3 fewer than in May last year, and rear-end and side-impact collisions saw 9 fewer deaths than in the same period in 2024.
It is concerning that 19 of the deceased were not using safety devices at the time of the accident, 15 of whom were travelling in cars. During the last weekend of the month, 6 people lost their lives in 5 fatal accidents, all due to run-off-road incidents on interurban roads.
Regarding the last weekend, from 3 PM on Friday, May 30, until midnight on Sunday, June 1, 6 people died on interurban roads in 5 fatal accidents.
Considering the type of road, 5 of the fatalities occurred in accidents on conventional roads and 1 on high-capacity roads.
Of the 6 deceased, 1 was a vulnerable user (1 motorcyclist), while the other 5 were travelling in cars. The 5 fatal accidents were run-off-road incidents. The accidents occurred in Callella (Barcelona), Espinosa de los Monteros (Burgos), Hinojal (Cáceres), A Baña (A Coruña), and Zalamea la Real (Huelva).
