Communities are beginning to notice an increase in flu cases following the Christmas period, ahead of the disease's peak expected in two to three weeks, which may also coincide with a rise in COVID-19 infections.

In Aragon, the flu has reached 75.5 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, surpassing the epidemic threshold set at 58. This has led the Health Department to recommend the use of masks in healthcare facilities. Medical unions in Madrid, Catalonia, and the Valencian Community have called for an increase in available beds for these patients.

Meanwhile, the Satse Nursing Union in Malaga has raised concerns about the critical situation faced by the Critical and Hospitalization Units at the Virgen de la Victoria University Hospital in the city. According to a statement from the union, all beds in the Emergency Observation area are occupied, with even 'X' beds in use, a term used to describe placing more patients than assigned to each module.

However, the Director General of Public Health of the Community of Madrid, Elena Andradas, assured on Wednesday that the Madrid healthcare system has "sufficient capacity" to meet the demand from the flu peak, expected to hit the region in the third week of January, and denied any "collapse" in Emergency services.

"There is no collapse or shortage of beds in the Community of Madrid. What exists is an adaptation of beds according to the demand that arises each day and hour in the region. The Community of Madrid has sufficient capacity to meet the demand of a flu peak, as has happened in any previous year," she stated.
