Rewriting History

I want to start by stating that the person writing these lines has launched several initiatives about Miguel Hernández in the Alicante City Council. The person writing these lines shares a hometown and proudly so, with the poet from Vega Baja, in addition to sharing the same surname as the poet's wife. Considering the stance of the person writing these lines and their recognition of the poet, I state that accepting to annul the trials against Miguel Hernández is, in my opinion, a wrong decision and I allow myself to explain why, as I believe. The family of Miguel Hernández asks for the annulment of the poet's trials, a request totally understandable from the family's perspective, and that it reaches the political arena, falls within absolute normality.

Miguel Hernández is a poet from Vega Baja, an ideologically committed poet, but a poet with his contradictions. Red and taurine, lover of freedom and cultural commissioner in Jaén during the civil war. Firm in his convictions, so much so that he preferred to lose friendship with José María de Cossío who asked him to write a letter renouncing his ideas to obtain his freedom, which cost their friendship and he preferred to remain faithful to his beliefs. This fact speaks of the firmness of his character.

If Miguel Hernández is stripped of his life trajectory, perhaps we would not have some of his most well-known poems where he expresses his character and ideology, 'Nanas de la cebolla', 'El hombre que está solo y espera', 'Como el toro he nacido para el luto' or 'Aceituneros', only a beloved poet would remain, by a part of the more ideologized society, he would only be a poet for a few. The minister and, regrettably also the Generalitat Valenciana, want to take away Miguel Hernández's memory, his dignity for being faithful to his ideals.

The Minister of Culture and the Generalitat Valenciana, always from my point of view, by accepting this request, apart from rewriting this country's literary history, it opens up to rewrite the entire civil war. Modifying Miguel Hernández's life trajectory means, from my point of view, entering into incoherencies both for the Minister of Culture and the Generalitat Valenciana.

The minister, in his declaration of intentions about this initiative adheres to the ideological part of the work that benefits him most, forgets the part that does not interest him, the taurine part which he has declared war on and withdrawing the National Bullfighting Award is the maximum exponent of his thinking. However, this is how his Ministry's page defines it: "Bullfighting, understood as the set of artistic, creative and productive knowledge and activities, including breeding and selection of fighting bulls that converge in modern bullfighting and bullfighting art has been declared Spanish cultural heritage worthy of protection throughout national territory (Law 18/2013 of November 12)."

In addition to "Law 18/2013 establishes the competence of the General State Administration to ensure conservation and promotion of Bullfighting as cultural heritage for all Spaniards as well as to protect everyone's right to its knowledge access and free exercise in its different manifestations and specifically develop measures for identification documentation research evaluation and transmission of this heritage in its different aspects (art. 5 of Law 18/2013)." After reading this what measures have you taken? The one you could execute most easily even supposedly against your own obligations.

The Generalitat Valenciana by subscribing to this agreement shows from my point of view a null vision of the artist as well as renouncing cultural combat which always wins on left assimilating its postulates that have nothing to do with poet's own figure but rewriting history. The attempt to rewrite Miguel Hernández's history, stripping it of its complexity and contradictions is not only political manipulation but also contempt towards cultural diversity both institutions pretend to represent.

But why do they want to rewrite this history? Because there are still people who due inability present other alternatives keep showing greatness their work look back with aim never turn page on tremendous wound between Spaniards civil war. Sometimes when reading certain news I think patrols one another side haven't stopped setting up checkpoints.
