Residents of the community group "Nosotros Talavera y Comarcas" in Talavera de la Reina (Toledo) have reached out to the Emir of Qatar, Tamim bin Hamad al Thani, requesting his support in funding the restoration of the city's Arab monuments, such as the walls, towers, and the Alcazaba, built by Abd al-Rahman III. The association's motivation to contact the Qatari Emir stems from the "institutional neglect suffered by Talavera's historical heritage due to the lack of necessary investments," as explained by its president, José María García.
To this end, they have sent a letter to the State of Qatar through its ambassador in Spain, Salem bin Mubarak Al Shafi, highlighting that Talavera de la Reina is "the ancient Talabayra, a strategic location in Al-Andalus," and expressing their desperation over the neglect of their historical heritage, particularly that related to its Arab past.
"The State of Qatar emerges as an ideal interlocutor to aid in the restoration of these monuments, and we are convinced that this collaboration could exemplify how joint efforts between nations and regions can result in tangible benefits for local communities and the preservation of shared history," the letter continues. "Nosotros Talavera y Comarcas" emphasizes the "unfulfilled promises by national and regional institutions to preserve this heritage" and stresses the "urgency" of valuing it. Hence, they have decided to "seek allies who understand the importance of protecting and promoting this cultural wealth."
"This unique heritage is in an alarming state of decay due to the apathy of public institutions such as the Junta of Castilla-La Mancha, the Toledo Provincial Council, and the central government, which have shown a regrettable lack of commitment to conserving and rehabilitating these cultural assets," states the president of this association, José María García, who has invited the Qatari ambassador and the people of Qatar to visit Talavera de la Reina, "aware of their sensitivity and that of their country towards the preservation of historical and cultural heritage and our shared history."
This community association counts on the fact that the Qatari ambassador—a country that also has an Umayyad past—is a veteran diplomat with a degree in Letters and History from the Arab University of Beirut, which assures his sensitivity towards the Islamic past of Talavera de la Reina.
