Researchers from the Nutrition Epidemiology Unit (EPINUT) at the Miguel Hernández University of Elche (UMH), led by Professor Jesús Vioque, have spearheaded a study validating a food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) to assess the diet of children aged 18 months.

The results of the research, conducted in collaboration with the NELA study (https://nela.imib.es/) at the University of Murcia (UMU), demonstrate that this questionnaire is a reliable tool for use in epidemiological studies aimed at investigating how dietary intake at very early ages can influence health in the short, medium, and long term.

The study, published in the journal Nutrients (accessible at https://www.mdpi.com/2072-6643/16/24/4403), highlights EPINUT's commitment to creating and validating FFQs at all life stages, boasting a collection of over 10 validated questionnaires to date (https://epinut.umh.es/bibliodieta/).

To validate the FFQ results, two reference methods were used. Firstly, expert interviewers collected three 24-hour recalls over a three-month period, during which parents recorded the food and beverage consumption of their children on the day prior to the interview.

Secondly, a biochemical method was employed, comparing fatty acid levels in buccal mucosa cells with the intakes estimated by the FFQ. This second method is based on non-invasive biological samples, a novel approach in the validation of such questionnaires.

This validation was made possible thanks to the work of a multidisciplinary team, involving various health professionals and researchers such as dietitians-nutritionists, doctors, and epidemiologists from institutions like UMH, UMU, the Alicante Institute for Health and Biomedical Research (ISABIAL), the Murcian Institute for Biosanitary Research Pascual Parrilla (IMIB), the Biomedical Research Networking Centre (CIBER), and the General University Hospital of Elche (HGUE).
