At 04:30 hours, after resolving the IT malfunction, the Talgo Avril trains are deemed ready for service commencement. With this informative note, the Spanish railway operator closes the chapter on the issues that left all the company's recently built convoys, constructed by the firm founded by Alejandro Goicoechea and José Luis Oriol Urigüen, parked this Wednesday.

Following this "IT incident" - as Renfe described it - which affected all series 106 trains and was related to "software loading issues associated with the year change", these trains, launched in April 2024, are now "fully operational", Spanish operator sources detail to this newspaper.

However, delays are still being recorded at several major stations across the Spanish railway network. "We are doubling the capacities of the remaining trains to ensure passenger mobility," Renfe confirmed this Wednesday.

Problems with Talgo

The failure of the Avril is yet another issue following the incidents these units have been experiencing since their launch in late April 2024. There are 30 trains that have already led to Talgo facing a fine of 116 million for delays of over two years in their delivery. A penalty that was formally communicated at the end of November and has already led to the suspension of pending payments to Talgo for their manufacture.

Renfe owes approximately 120 million for this order, which, for now, will not be paid. Additionally, there are another 50 million in penalties pending resolution, not to mention the more than 100 incidents that the Minister of Transport, Óscar Puente, indicated had been recorded between June and August.
