The new SEAL U DM-i is the first plug-in hybrid from the Chinese brand BYD featuring Dual Mode technology, offering an efficient and affordable solution for daily mobility needs and long-distance travel without worries. When the battery is fully charged and the EV driving mode is selected, the SEAL U DM-i operates as a 100% electric model, and when the charge level is low, it transforms into a low-consumption gasoline hybrid with high autonomy. The SEAL U DM-i in all its versions has two driving modes: EV and HEV. In the first mode, the driver can select the "EV only mode" for daily commutes or urban transit. In the second mode, the vehicle primarily uses the energy supplied by the battery. Only during acceleration does the gasoline engine provide additional power to the wheels to support the battery. The driver does not have to worry about range or where to charge, as the engine charges the battery (adjustable between 25% and 70%), ensuring electric driving is always available. The battery also charges through regeneration technology.
The BYD SEAL U DM-i is available in the market in three versions: Design, Comfort, and Boost. The Design version (€45,500) features two electric motors, one with 150 kW (204 hp) on the front axle and another with 120 kW (163 hp) on the rear, complemented by a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine with 96 kW (131 hp). The total maximum system power is 238 kW (324 hp) and the total maximum torque is 550 newton-meters. The Design trim offers all-wheel drive and an efficient 18.3 kWh battery. The Boost (€38,500) and Comfort (€40,500) versions feature a hybrid system with front-wheel drive, equipped with a 1.5-liter gasoline engine developing 72 kW (98 hp), combined with a 145 kW (197 hp) electric motor. The Boost, like the Design, includes an 18.3 kWh battery. The Comfort version, on the other hand, has a larger capacity battery (26.6 kWh), achieving a 100% electric range of 125 kilometers. The combined total power of the Boost and Comfort versions is 160 kW (218 hp), with a maximum torque of 300 newton-meters. The prices of the new BYD SEAL U MD-i are expressed without including the brand's promotional discounts, nor those corresponding to the Moves III Plan and the IRPF deduction.
The Design version of the BYD SEAL U DM-i, with all-wheel drive, can travel up to 70 kilometers in 100% electric mode; including gasoline, it has a total range of 870 km. The Boost version, with front-wheel drive, offers 80 km of 100% electric range, with a total range of 1,080 kilometers. All versions of the BYD SEAL U DM-i allow charging in three-phase alternating current at 11 kW and 18 kW in direct current. Thanks to this, the charging time in direct current from 30 to 80 percent of the level is only 35 minutes.
The new BYD SEAL U DM-i offers a high level of passive and active safety. To monitor traffic, warn the driver, or even intervene in case of risk of an accident, it is equipped as standard with a wide range of advanced driver assistance systems using five radars and a centralized camera. Features include forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, rear collision warning, rear cross-traffic alert, lane change assistant, intelligent speed limit control, blind spot detection system, and much more. The Design version also incorporates a Head-Up Display. During night driving, the full-LED lighting technology includes a high beam assistant and standard adaptive headlights. To help maneuver safely, a panoramic camera offers a 360-degree view of the vehicle on the central screen, including a top view and another of the car's surroundings with the help of an animated car. Combining images collected by several wide-angle cameras provides the sensation of viewing the maneuver from outside.
The BYD SEAL U measures 4.77 m in length, 1.89 m in width, and 1.67 m in height. With a wheelbase of 2,765 mm and a completely flat floor design, it offers ample legroom for rear passengers. The rear seat can be folded in sections (60:40), facilitating the expansion of the cargo volume from 425 to 1,440 liters. Its functionality is enhanced with four USB ports or the wireless charging function for two smartphones simultaneously.
Inside, the BYD SEAL U DM-i offers a modern and elegant design, soft-touch surfaces, top-quality finishes, and an immersive multicolor ambient lighting system. The seats, various dashboard areas, door panels, and center console are upholstered in vegan leather with contrasting double stitching. The front seats feature multiple electric adjustments, heating, and standard ventilation. Meanwhile, the electric panoramic sunroof provides great brightness and ventilation to the cabin. The Intelligent Cockpit system is operated through the large 15.6-inch electrically rotating touchscreen - which can be viewed in horizontal or vertical position - while the 12.3-inch LCD digital instrumentation displays a wide variety of information for the driver.
