Registrations of plug-in vehicles remain insufficient to meet decarbonisation targets, considering that the National Integrated Energy and Climate Plan (PNIEC) aims for 5.5 million such models on the road by 2030, compared to the current 600,000.

This is the criticism from the Business Association for the Development and Promotion of Electric Mobility (Aedive) and the National Association of Vehicle Sellers (Ganvam), as the registration data for all types of electrified vehicles, including fully electric and plug-in hybrid cars, motorcycles, commercial, and industrial vehicles, concluded 2024 with a 3.9% decline, totalling 133,699 units.

They warn that to maintain the momentum of December, which was the month with the highest volume recorded all year, with a significant increase of over 21% reaching 17,264 units, the government must accelerate its efforts. In this regard, both entities appreciate the continuation of the Moves Plan but see the need for a new national direct aid scheme to improve the current system's effectiveness and at least double the volume of electrified vehicles by the end of 2025.

When separated by propulsion type, registrations of fully electric vehicles of all kinds (cars, two-wheelers, commercial, and industrial) fell by 3.1%, with 73,961 units sold.

Analysing by vehicle type, registrations of fully electric cars ended the year with a 7.8% increase, totalling 58,675 units; notably, last month's registrations surged by 48.2%, reaching 8,925 units. Specifically, the analysed data reveals that over 66% of pure electric car purchases recorded until December were made by private individuals. Thus, this private channel drives the 100% electric car market, increasing its purchases by 40% in 2024, with a total of 33,488 units sold. Conversely, corporate fleets and rental companies closed negatively, highlighting the importance of extending fiscal measures favouring electric vehicles to businesses.

Meanwhile, electric mopeds ended the year with a 42.8% decrease, totalling 2,709 units, while zero-emission motorcycle registrations concluded the year with a 36.5% drop, reaching 5,422 units. Electric vans, on the other hand, closed 2024 with a 26.7% decline, totalling 4,871 units.

Meanwhile, plug-in hybrid vehicles recorded a 4.9% decline last year, totalling 59,738 units, of which 58,580 were cars. Thus, data from Aedive and Ganvam show that 11.5% of car registrations correspond to electrified models (pure and plug-in hybrids), compared to 12.2% last year.
