The Rector of the University of Alicante, Amparo Navarro, called for a funding plan on Tuesday "to ensure the future of our institution and the public university system," which addresses "stable funding for research and allows for the establishment of a budgetary floor, guaranteed through a state or regional pact for Science."

During her speech at the academic event of Saint Thomas Aquinas, Amparo Navarro emphasized the University's ability to "adapt to societal and scientific changes," while continuing to advocate for the funding plan and "fair spending."

This financial stability, the Rector insisted, is necessary for "renewing staff, retaining and attracting talent, and improving the prospects of young researchers."

In this regard, she argued that "a 21st-century university requires regulations that meet the demands of this era, considering humanity's challenges in all areas of knowledge, enabling the promotion of research and the formation of a free, autonomous, independent, cultured, and reflective citizenry."

"We therefore support the quality public university, which is part of our tradition of quality, part of our university tradition, Spanish and European. Some think that the public is nobody's. But some of us think that the public is everyone's," she emphasized.

Among these challenges, she insisted on continuous education, as the current situation of demographic aging and declining birth rates requires that "the adult population must be in constant learning." This, according to the Rector, "will also require a pedagogical revolution in the era of artificial intelligence and new information models."

135 extraordinary prizes

The Rector stated that the 135 extraordinary prizes for undergraduate, master's, and doctoral degrees represent "that culture of effort in achieving the best results in education" and embody "the essential missions that society entrusts to universities."

On the occasion of Saint Thomas Aquinas Day, the University of Alicante awarded 44 extraordinary doctoral prizes, 55 undergraduate prizes, and 37 master's prizes this Tuesday, recognizing the best academic records.

More than 700 people attended the event, including the awardees and their families, as well as the Vice Rectors of Research, Juan Mora; Academic Planning and Faculty, Luis Alfonso Martínez; and International Relations and Development Cooperation, Rosa María Martínez, and the Secretary General of the University of Alicante, Josep Ochoa, who accompanied the Rector at the presidential table.
