Over a thousand athletes gathered this Sunday for the third edition of the Prosolia Race, setting a new participation record. The race course ran through urban terrain, with the start and finish line in front of 'Sergio Melgares' park, at PAU-5.
The five-kilometre route could be completed by running or walking. The number of athletes exceeded the initial expectations of the organisers, who had to increase the number of registrations. In addition to individual categories, various categories were established for awarding trophies to the top three in each category: two sisters, domestic partners or married couples, mother and daughter, grandmother-mother-granddaughter.
The Councillor for Social Welfare and Public Rights, Begoña León, highlighted the high participation and the festive and family atmosphere experienced during the event. She noted that it is a "very special race, as it not only provides a fantastic opportunity to engage in sports but also allows for the visibility and advocacy of women's presence in all areas of society."
León, who started the race alongside the Sports Councillor, Toni Gallego, thanked all the runners for their participation, "which is more important than ever today, as the proceeds from the race numbers will be used to help women in situations of extreme vulnerability in Alicante." Specifically, the funds will support social projects by the Oblate Sisters of the Most Holy Redeemer, aimed at assisting women in prostitution and/or victims of trafficking for sexual exploitation and gender-based violence.
