Real Madrid kicks off the new year 2025 by initiating the process for the club's presidential elections. Florentino Pérez has organized a Board of Directors meeting on January 7 at 5:30 PM to launch the procedure aimed at setting up a new term for the next four years for both the club's top leader and his closest associates.
With a slight advance on the expected schedule, similar to the previous election call four years ago, Florentino Pérez embarks on another race where no obstacles are foreseen for the ACS president to continue leading the Chamartín club. He first assumed the presidency in 2000 after defeating Lorenzo Sanz in an election where he promised to sign then-Barcelona player Luis Figo, which won him the support of the members. He returned in 2009 after a voluntary departure in 2006 that led to a period of instability for Real Madrid.
Florentino Pérez faces no serious opposition, as his successful management of Real Madrid has been endorsed by the achievement of 65 titles across football and basketball sections, as well as an economic management of the club praised even by figures as distant from him in other matters as LaLiga president Javier Tebas.
A Real Madrid member since October 1, 1961, president of the Real Madrid Foundation from July 18, 2000, to February 27, 2006, and from June 1, 2009, to the present, and Lifetime Patron of the Real Madrid Foundation since February 27, 2006, Florentino Pérez is the most decorated president in Real Madrid's history, surpassing Santiago Bernabéu.
Under his leadership, the Chamartín club has won seven European Cups, seven Club World Cups, six European Super Cups, seven Leagues, three King's Cups, seven Spanish Super Cups, three European basketball Cups, eight basketball Leagues, seven basketball King's Cups, nine Spanish basketball Super Cups, and one Intercontinental basketball Cup.
Additionally, he has spearheaded the grand renovation of the Santiago Bernabéu, a project aimed at turning the stadium into a money-making machine to ensure Real Madrid's ability to compete economically in an environment marked by the rise of so-called state clubs and the emergence of new players on the board like Saudi football and its oil-derived wealth.
Despite the blow to estimated revenues due to the suspension of planned concerts caused by the legal battle initiated by Bernabéu neighbors complaining about the noise generated and the halt by a Madrid court of the construction of two parking lots and a tunnel at Paseo de la Castellana-Santiago Bernabéu-Padre Damián, which were authorized by the Madrid City Council in March 2023, the main thorn in the side of Real Madrid's president is the Super League, a project he maintains against all odds despite the withdrawal of other clubs, except Barça, that initially supported its creation in April 2021 but quickly retreated in the face of UEFA threats and rejection from both major national leagues and a significant portion of fans.
While he had to defeat Lorenzo Sanz, who had just lifted the Eighth, in his first assault on the throne, during his second term leading Real Madrid, Florentino Pérez has had no rival, as he was the only candidate to present his candidacy in the 2009 elections that returned him to the presidency. He renewed his position in 2013, 2017, and 2021 without needing to go through the polls, as there was no alternative.
This absence of opposition is supported by statutes that impose stringent requirements to run for the presidency of Real Madrid, including a minimum of 20 uninterrupted years as a club member and the need to provide a bank guarantee of 15% of the club's budget backed by the candidate's personal assets.
