Real Madrid's journey to the Club World Cup semi-finals was driven by the efforts of two players sharing the García surname, echoing the days of the 'Madrid of the Garcías' from the 1980s. In a vastly different world, Gonzalo and Fran García were pivotal in overcoming Borussia Dortmund, despite a late scare.

A goal from the forward and a strike from the full-back in the first half set Real Madrid on course for a victory over Borussia Dortmund, paving the way for a high-stakes clash with PSG next Wednesday at the MetLife Stadium, a venue where Xabi Alonso's side has shown significant improvement.

With a more tactical approach, the emergence of Gonzalo from the youth ranks, and a desire to impress the new boss, Real Madrid's squad has shed the lethargy that marked Carlo Ancelotti's tenure. This newfound spirit carried them through a dramatic finale against Dortmund, featuring a stunning Mbappé bicycle kick, two late goals from the German side, a penalty conceded by Huijsen resulting in his red card, and a crucial save by Courtois to prevent extra time.

From Underdog to Star

To set up a showdown with PSG, where Kylian Mbappé will be a key figure, Xabi Alonso fielded the same starting eleven for the third consecutive match but adjusted the formation. Tchouaméni's versatility bolstered the midfield, with Arda Güler playing a pivotal role. Gonzalo, initially an underdog, is now emerging as a tournament star.

After scoring against Al Hilal, Salzburg, and Juventus, the academy graduate proved lethal once more against Dortmund, capitalising on a superb pass from Arda Güler to score with a deft finish past Kobel. His fourth goal in the Club World Cup rewarded Real Madrid's ambitious start and tactical flexibility, which caught the German side off guard.

Real Madrid's dominance in midfield, with Tchouaméni back in the pivot role, allowed them to control possession, swiftly switch play, and exploit the flanks, doubling their lead early. Gonzalo combined on the right with Trent, whose low cross was met by Fran García to score his second goal since returning to Real Madrid.

The Whites were a whirlwind and could have sealed the match before halftime through Bellingham and Vinicius, who missed clear chances. They would come to regret it. After spending most of the second half unthreatened, Real Madrid saw Dortmund surge in injury time, nearly jeopardising their passage to a tantalising semi-final against PSG.
