Real Madrid has once again claimed a title, this time in the economic arena. It is the first football club in the world to surpass 1 billion euros in annual revenue, exceeding the burgeoning Manchester City, owned by a group of investors from the United Arab Emirates led by Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, by over 200 million euros. The club's victories in the Champions League and the Spanish League boosted its earnings by 25.8% in the last season (2023-24) to 1.045 billion euros, compared to 831.4 million in the 2022/23 period.

The annual 'Football Money League' report by Deloitte, which includes the 20 football teams with the highest business volume, once again places Real Madrid at the top for the second consecutive year. This time, their combined figure also set a record with 11.2 billion euros during the previous season, 2023/24. This amount represents a 6% increase in sales compared to the previous year.

This time, there was no increase in broadcast revenue (4.3 billion euros among all clubs) reported by the clubs, as each of the five major European leagues were subject to the same television broadcast contracts as the previous season.

The completion of the Santiago Bernabéu stadium renovations doubled matchday revenue, reaching 248 million euros. The club, presided over by Florentino Pérez, who this week confirmed his continuation for a new four-year term as no other candidate stood for the club's elections, also saw a 19% increase in commercial revenue (rising from 403 million euros to 482 million), driven by a greater volume of merchandising (extending far beyond the classic jerseys) and new sponsorships.

Camp Nou Renovations

Regarding other Spanish clubs in the 'top 20' of this report, released this Thursday, FC Barcelona drops from fourth to sixth place, achieving a turnover of 760.3 million euros compared to 800.1 million in the 2022/2023 season, resulting in a 5% reduction in sales, reports Europa Press. This decrease was due to a 63 million euro drop in matchday revenue due to the need to play at the Estadio Olímpico Lluís Companys because of renovations at their traditional home, Camp Nou, which could be ready for play this spring, although it might have to wait until next summer.

Meanwhile, Atlético de Madrid, twelfth in this ranking, generated 409.5 million euros in the 2023/24 season, a 12.5% increase over the 364.1 million recorded in the previous season. Additionally, commercial and matchday revenues are the fastest-growing segments for these clubs, with an 11% year-on-year increase and a 10% rise, respectively, mainly driven by an increase in hosting live events not related to football.

Manchester City retains second place in this economic ranking, being the English club with the highest revenue (837.8 million in turnover vs 825.9 million in 2022/23, a 1.4% increase) and once again surpassing its own record in a single season. On the other hand, Juventus experienced the largest drop in this list (356 million euros), falling from 11th to 16th place, its lowest position in the history of the Football Money League report.

Sporting performance played a crucial role in the financial boost for many teams, such as Arsenal (717 million euros), Borussia Dortmund (514 million euros), Newcastle (372 million euros), and Aston Villa (310 million euros). The clubs ranked from 11th to 20th reflect the impact of on-field performance on financial results.

Spanish and English Clubs in Women's Football

For the third consecutive year, this study by Deloitte also includes the ranking of the 15 women's clubs generating the highest revenue. In this case, the combined sales reported by these teams exceed 100 million euros for the first time.

As expected, FC Barcelona Women remains in the top position among the clubs analyzed, with 17.9 million euros in revenue and a 26% increase compared to the 2022/23 season. Arsenal Women ranks second with a very similar figure. The 'top 5' is completed by two other English clubs, Chelsea Women (13.4 million euros) and Manchester United Women (10.7 million euros), with Real Madrid Women (10.5 million euros) rounding out this elite group.
