Read the Full Statement from the UMH Rector on the New Appeal Against the Medicine Ruling

We wish to reiterate our willingness to collaborate in creating a shared space for university practices in the field of Medicine and other health disciplines in the province of Alicante. As I expressed in the meeting convened by the President of the Generalitat on January 13, alongside the rector of the UA, the Health Minister, and the Universities Minister, I find the initiative to convert all public hospitals in the Valencian Community into university hospitals very appropriate.

I stated to the media, following the meeting, that the ruling of the TSJ establishes a new temporal reality, as the appeal, if admitted, would take several years to resolve. Therefore, the UMH is committed to collaborating so that the Medicine Degree at the UA develops under the best possible conditions and with the highest quality guarantees for all Medicine students in the province of Alicante.

As I also mentioned, the ruling is, in my opinion, completely incoherent, unprecedented, and lacking adequate legal foundations. As I committed in the aforementioned meeting, after a period of reflection influenced by the attitudes, despite the ruling not being final, of some politicians and media, I want to announce that the UMH will continue with its right to appeal a ruling with which it cannot agree. For coherence, responsibility, and safeguarding the interests of the UMH, we cannot accept the unjust claims in the ruling as "judicial truths." A ruling that makes ambiguous statements about university policy based on press information.

Nevertheless, I want to reiterate once again our willingness to cooperate among public universities as agreed in the aforementioned meeting, and I have sent a letter to the President of the Generalitat confirming our commitment in writing. In fact, meetings are already being held to share hospital resources, which will be significantly expanded by the Generalitat, so that the quality of patient care can even be improved and the Medicine students in the province of Alicante receive the best possible education.
