The 'pax romana' signed between UA and UMH, allowing the latter to offer Nursing studies, has prompted a response from the provincial college of this healthcare discipline. The Alicante Nursing College believes a "thorough study" is needed to understand the real needs of the healthcare system, and from there, create the necessary structural positions.

They assure that otherwise, it would create "a plethora of unemployed professionals who will once again be forced to seek employment abroad, as happened years ago."

The announcement of the creation of the Nursing Degree at UMH has almost coincided with the release of a report by the Ministry of Health, indicating that our country needs around 100,000 nurses to reach the average nurse-to-population ratio. Additionally, the Valencian Community has the third lowest ratio among all the country's regions, with 5.46 nurses per thousand inhabitants, while the Spanish average is 6.3.

All hospitals will be university hospitals

It should be remembered that the measures adopted by the Consell to foster a cordial agreement between the two universities also include converting all public hospitals in the Valencian Community into university hospitals, allowing students to carry out their internships there.

Thus, the province of Alicante and the rest of the Valencian Community will be a "shared space" for internships in Medicine and other disciplines "without territorial or hospital distribution" under the supervision of the Department of Health, as explained by President Carlos Mazón after last Monday's meeting with the two university rectors and the heads of the departments involved in this episode.

Regarding the implementation of a new Nursing degree in the province - the fourth, remaining at UA, CEU, and Europea - the UA rector, Amparo Navarro, assured that the Consell's decision will be respected from the San Vicente campus. "It's a day of projects and turning the page," in addition to facing the "construction process we are starting."
