Queen Sonja of Norway, aged 87, is set to undergo heart surgery next week, as announced by the Norwegian Royal House. The official statement indicates that the planned procedure aims to replace a deteriorated heart valve that was previously treated over a decade ago.
The operation will take place at the National Hospital in Oslo after the Queen was admitted to Lillehammer Hospital, a small town in the country's interior, last Saturday night due to an arrhythmia. Fortunately, she was discharged the following day once her heart rhythm was stabilised. Although the Palace describes the operation as routine within its complexity, the news has sparked concern in the country, where Queen Sonja is a beloved and respected figure.
Since her marriage to King Harald V in 1968, Sonja has been recognised as a monarch committed to culture, the arts, and gender equality. True to her character, the Queen has sent a reassuring message to the Norwegian people, expressing her confidence in the doctors and gratitude for the affection received. "I am in good hands and have the support of my family," she stated.
Following the surgery, there will be a recovery period during which the Queen will temporarily step back from her official duties. However, the Royal House assures that King Harald and Crown Prince Haakon will assume her responsibilities during this time.
