Sean 'Diddy' Combs has been held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, New York, since his arrest last September on sex trafficking charges, awaiting trial. Despite his incarceration, he remains vigilant about his public image and is taking legal action. His latest move is a $50 million defamation lawsuit.
The music producer's lawyers filed a lawsuit in New York federal court on Wednesday against Courtney Burgess, who allegedly claimed to possess videos implicating the rapper in sexual assaults on eight celebrities. The lawsuit targets her, her attorney Ariel Mitchell, and media group Nexstar Media, owner of NewsNation, accusing them of broadcasting Burgess's claims without verifying their accuracy. Combs accuses the parties involved of spreading "outrageous lies" for profit, damaging his reputation and right to a fair trial.
The lawsuit alleges that Burgess, with the assistance of her lawyer Mitchell, falsely claimed to have incriminating videos involving Combs in sexual assaults against celebrities and minors. According to the artist's legal team, these claims were picked up and published by NewsNation, which aired the information in late 2024 without conducting necessary checks to confirm the allegations' truthfulness.
The court document details that Burgess claimed the videos were provided by Kim Porter, Combs's former partner and mother of four of his children, who passed away in 2018. However, the detained rapper's representatives assert that no relationship existed between Burgess and Porter and that the USB drives could not contain such recordings as they do not exist.
The music producer's lawyer described the allegations as "false, offensive, and a blatant attempt to profit from tragedy." In a statement, he added that the lawsuit aims to set a precedent against "malicious falsehoods" that have poisoned the public's perception of the artist and hindered the fairness of the criminal trial he faces.
Nexstar Media Group and its channel NewsNation have been named as co-defendants for broadcasting the unverified accusations. According to the lawsuit, the channel "amplified" Burgess and Mitchell's statements, adding comments suggesting the existence of "hidden cameras" in Combs's residence without providing evidence to support such claims. Additionally, the music mogul's team claims the channel did not contact them for comments before airing.
For the musician's lawyers, this action is part of a deliberate attempt by the defendants to tarnish Combs's reputation, portraying him as a "libertine and pedophile." This damage, according to the lawsuit, ultimately seeks to poison public perception and taint the jury that will decide on the criminal charges the businessman faces.
Since his arrest in September, 'Diddy' Combs has denied all charges related to sex trafficking and organized crime. His trial is scheduled for May 2025, and judicial authorities have denied him bail due to the seriousness of the accusations.
Meanwhile, Ariel Mitchell, Burgess's attorney, has responded to the lawsuit by calling it "pathetic and baseless," announcing his intention to file a countersuit. "This is simply a pathetic ploy to silence victims and those who defend them. Diddy has time to sue but refuses to accept service of the lawsuits already filed against him," Mitchell told 'People' magazine. "I look forward to filing a countersuit and ensuring the court punishes not only Diddy but also his lawyers for this frivolous and baseless filing," he added.
Burgess, for her part, claims the videos were seized by federal authorities, preventing her from presenting evidence to support her claims. In November 2024, a 'The New York Times' report questioned her credibility, noting that people close to Kim Porter had never heard of her. In this context, the defamation lawsuit seeks not only to repair the damage to his image but also to send a clear message against those who, according to his legal team, use falsehoods to generate income or media attention. "Such intentional falsehoods will no longer be tolerated," the legal team assured. "Sean 'Diddy' Combs is committed to clearing his name and determined to protect his right to a fair trial against such attacks," they emphasized.
With the criminal trial scheduled for May and the defamation battle just beginning, the future of Sean 'Diddy' Combs remains uncertain, and the coming months will be crucial for the legal and professional fate of one of the most powerful and controversial figures in the American music scene.
