The spokesperson for the Socialist Municipal Group, Ana Barceló, announced this Tuesday that she will forward the decision made by Mayor Luis Barcala to both the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility and Brussels. The decision concerns the implementation of a Low Emission Zone (LEZ) that does not include any penalties for violators and therefore "will have no impact on the goal of reducing pollution, combating climate change, and preserving health."

In this regard, Councilman Raúl Ruiz added that Barcala has adopted Vox's denialist stance by pushing a regulation devoid of substance and lacking penalties. "How will compliance with the regulation be ensured then? It is useless," stated the councilman.

"The PP government insists that there is no pollution problem in Alicante; however, there are no measuring devices in the city center. It is unheard of that during the European Mobility Week celebrations in Alicante, an utterly watered-down ordinance is being pushed. Barcala claims he wants to promote public transport while returning 1.7 million euros meant to subsidize public transport and withdrawing a 100% discount for young people," Ruiz asserted.

The socialist added that "experts agree that when road traffic is reduced without activating restrictions, more emissions end up being recorded," which leads him to believe that "the ordinance agreed upon by PP and Vox is not only irresponsible but also inconsistent."
