The PSOE of San Fulgencio Town Hall has filed a motion of no confidence this Wednesday, supported by a councillor from the Independent Party for Nationalities (PIPN), a group of two councillors that is part of the current PP local government, against the popular mayor José María Ballester.
In this way, former socialist mayor José Sampere, currently a councillor in the municipal corporation who held the leadership in the previous term, could regain the position with the support of PIPN councillor and PP executive member Alain Franz.
According to Sampere (PSOE) in statements to Europa Press, Franz (PIPN) made this decision due to "disagreements with the mayor," thus his support could see the motion of no confidence against the current PP mayor succeed.
The municipal corporation of San Fulgencio, located in the Vega Baja region, consists of 13 councillors, with an absolute majority requiring seven members. The PSOE was the most voted list in the 2023 local elections, with six councillors, so Franz's support for the motion of no confidence presented by the socialists would allow the council to return the mayoralty to Sampere.
In a statement, the PSOE of San Fulgencio indicated that Sampere, the proposed candidate to take the mayoralty from Ballester, "will once again lead the Town Hall with the aim of restoring institutional stability and advancing stalled projects during the current mandate."
The PSOE of San Fulgencio emphasised that this initiative responds to "the need to shift municipal management after months of paralysis, lack of transparency, and neglect of the needs of the town's residents," as well as to "end the undemocratic behaviour of the mayor."
"The majority will of the citizens expressed at the polls must be respected. San Fulgencio needs a stable, committed government focused on the real problems of the town. With this motion, we are returning to the path of serious and honest work that has always characterised the PSOE in our locality," Sampere stated.
The PSOE of the Town Hall has reminded that once the motion of no confidence is registered, it must be debated and voted on in an extraordinary council meeting "which the municipal secretary is obliged to convene within a maximum of ten working days."
