The spokesperson for the Socialist Municipal Group, Ana Barceló, offered on Monday the abstention of her party to the Mayor of Alicante, Luis Barcala, in the council meeting to enable the municipal adjustment plan to proceed, "in exchange for not yielding to the blackmail of the far-right and not succumbing to any of the racist, misogynistic, and homophobic measures proposed by Vox."

"What the far-right has announced is a declaration of war against the city of Alicante, a blackmail that affects children, immigrants, women, young people, and the LGTBI community. Ultimately, it is an intolerable attack on human rights. For the Socialist Group, there is no doubt whether to capitulate to the far-right's ideological path or to defend fundamental rights," Barceló asserted.

"It is evident that Vox is blackmailing Barcala's government, which has not fully considered the consequences of breaking this pact. It was Barcala who empowered the far-right's discourse, but now he has the opportunity to halt this attack on fundamental rights and defend democracy, with the PSOE's abstention on the approval of the adjustment plan," the socialists concluded.
