The Socialist municipal group in Benidorm has raised concerns this Tuesday about the lack of human and material resources in the City Council's Intervention Department, following the release of the annual summary report on internal control for the 2024 fiscal year. The document, prepared by the municipal Intervention itself, reveals, according to Socialist Councillor Antonio Charco, that "the available personnel has been clearly insufficient to develop an effective control model in accordance with current legislation."
Charco, the councillor responsible for overseeing the Finance area, emphasized that the report aims to provide a comprehensive assessment of the City Council's economic and financial management, identifying weaknesses, deficiencies, and non-compliance issues that need to be addressed promptly.
The document, presented at the last plenary session in May, warns that the internal control work—which includes prior auditing, financial control, and accounting—falls on a small team, forced to also undertake tasks such as preparing and sending reports to external bodies, budget execution, quarterly data submission, budget liquidation, and medium-term economic planning.
In addition to this overload, the report highlights that continuous urgencies in processing files and the lack of planning further complicate the Intervention's work. Often, the submitted documentation must be returned for analysis or correction, further slowing down internal processes.
The Socialist councillor indicated that the report's conclusions propose the development of an Annual Financial Control Plan, as well as the urgent creation of an Action Plan to strengthen municipal areas with more human and technical resources.
Charco has demanded that the PP Government team and the mayor himself act responsibly and respond to the internal needs of the City Council: "We have a mayor more concerned with his photos and political agenda than providing the best public services. He is overwhelmed by his roles in the PP, the firefighters' protests, and the chaos in the Provincial Council with Carlos Mazón. Benidorm needs a full-time mayor who listens to his workers and works for his city," he concluded.
