The Alicante Provincial Council will allocate 9,000 euros this year, 20% more than last year, to the promotion and dissemination of the Albatera breva, whose campaign officially started this Friday with the symbolic cutting of this fruit. The president of the provincial institution, Toni Pérez, participated in this event, highlighting the quality and nutritional value of the breva, while defending the agriculture of the Vega Baja region and "the efficient water management carried out here."

"In this province, we are people of the land, we cultivate well, with calmness, rigor, and very efficient water use," said Toni Pérez, adding that "Alicante's water is not to be trifled with, especially that of the Vega Baja del Segura, because it is unimaginable that, instead of this magnificent fig orchard, a desert would begin here in Spain."

Therefore, he reiterated the Provincial Council's commitment "to continue supporting and fighting for Albatera's breva to remain highly recognized and achieve Protected Geographical Indication." In this same vein, he encouraged the consumption of this fruit, "one of our identity symbols distinguished by its quality, taste, and nutritional values."

Alongside the president of the Provincial Council, the campaign's kickoff, sponsored this year by master ice cream maker from Logroño, Fernando Sáez, was also attended by the president of the Valencian Government, Carlos Mazón; the mayor of Albatera, vice president and deputy of Water Cycle, Ana Serna; the deputy of Infrastructure, Antonio Bernabeu, and other members of the local corporation.

The first mayor and head of the Water Cycle also highlighted the work of Albatera's breva producers and advocated for the water from the Tajo-Segura transfer to irrigate the region's fields.

The Alicante Provincial Council collaborates annually with the Albatera Breva Producers Association to develop various initiatives aimed at promoting this product, such as participating in fairs and events like Fruit Attraction. This year, the subsidy has also increased, rising from 7,500 euros to 9,000 euros.
