The Provincial Council of Alicante has approved in its ordinary July plenary session a motion recognizing the linguistic predominance of the city of Alicante according to the Valencian Use and Teaching Law. This motion was passed with the absolute majority of the Popular Party, including the vote of Alicante councillor Cristina García Garri, joined by the PSPV.

The initial proposal by Compromís was in "defense of the official status of Valencian in the city of Alicante" and condemned "linguistic persecution" following the institutional declaration promoted by the Alicante City Council requesting the Generalitat to change the city's current regime of Valencian linguistic predominance to Spanish.

The socialists have joined the Compromís motion transformed after an 'in voce' amendment presented by the Popular Party, warning that "the Provincial Council cannot oppose the autonomy of another local entity" and pointing out that "the debated issue is not a competence of the provincial institution," as stated by the Economic Development deputy, the popular Carlos Pastor.

Thus, the finally approved text agrees to "reaffirm the commitment of the Provincial Council to defend Valencian as a historical official and coexistence language" in the city of Alicante. Both Vox, who requested the change in the Alicante City Council, and Compromís have not supported the final wording of the motion.

Economic and Social Council next Tuesday 22 at 11 am

The provincial institution will convene the Economic and Social Council next Tuesday 22 at 11 am. This was announced by the president of the Provincial Council, Toni Pérez, during the debate of a motion presented by the socialist group, which demanded the provincial government team to convene this body in July and hold the debate on the state of the province in September. In this text, which was rejected with the votes of PP and Vox, although supported by the Compromís spokesperson, the PSPV warned of the "low execution" of the Provincial Council's Plan Planifica, which they placed at only 15 percent; the "reduction" of the economic allocation of the Plan +Cerca, and the "non-participation" in the Municipal Cooperation Fund by the Alicante provincial institution.

It was not the only controversial motion of the provincial plenary, although on this occasion the Popular Party and the socialists did not reach an understanding. The issue of corruption could not be overlooked in this session, leading to debates on two motions presented by Compromís and the Popular Party condemning corruption in institutions. The nationalists did not want to include the explicit request for the resignation of the Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, and the call for general elections. The Compromís spokesperson, Ximo Perles, admitted sharing the request for the socialist leader's resignation but rejected the amendment, understanding that it modified the expository part of his motion.

Although both texts shared practically all the agreement proposals, the Compromís one did not receive sufficient support - as only the PSOE Group voted in favor - while the one defended by the government team did gain the backing of PP and Vox.

Thus, the finally approved motion condemns any corrupt act at the level of administration and urges the Government of Spain to "purge all responsibilities derived from these with resignations not only of the people directly involved but also of the direct political leaders." Additionally, it calls for the Penal Code to be amended to include specific sanctions for those involved in corruption cases, such as the prohibition of contracting with the public administration.
