CCOO and UGT have held protests in Castellón, Alicante, and Valencia, specifically at Ballesol care homes, to highlight the plight of staff in private elderly care homes who, "in addition to having poor working conditions, receive low wages that the employers refuse to increase."

The unions have stated in a joint communiqué that "after a long year of waiting to start negotiations, the employers have proposed a clearly insufficient salary increase, considering the precarious situation of this sector that does not recognise the work of those who care for our elderly."

The salary of a geriatric care worker, according to the latest salary table in their 2023 collective agreement, is €1,112.30, with an additional €23.13 per month for being on-call, €20.82 for working on Sundays or holidays, and €19.17 per night shift.

Meanwhile, a nursing assistant in the public sector in the same year earned a salary of €1,512.15, €39.45 for each Sunday or holiday, and €35.10 per night shift. "Clearly, a significant wage disparity for performing the same tasks with fewer staff ratios," the unions lamented.

In this regard, they pointed out that staffing ratios in private residential centres are "well below" those of publicly owned centres and "are not sufficient to ensure quality care for our elderly."

UGT and CCOO noted that workers in this field "face physical, psychological, and emotional workloads, leading to musculoskeletal disorders and other health issues resulting from the high workload."

The sector, which is predominantly female, demonstrated its essential role during the pandemic, but "after the applause and public recognition, it has been forgotten and continues to be undervalued," they criticised.

Therefore, the unions argued that it is "imperative to recognise their work not only through words but also with a salary adjustment and improvements in working conditions that reflect their true value."

CCOO and UGT have demanded a "significant improvement in these conditions, as the workers in private elderly care homes deserve fair, dignified treatment in line with the work they perform, and the residents also deserve better care."
