2024 has not been a favourable year for vehicle production and export, as the low demand for electrified vehicles both in Spain and the rest of Europe, along with factory adjustments due to the introduction of new electrified models, has slowed down the sector.

According to figures published this Wednesday by the Manufacturers Association Anfac, vehicle production in Spain has decreased by 3% compared to 2023, totalling 2,376,504 units, after adding 139,203 new vehicles in December, a figure 2% lower than that recorded in the same month of the previous year.

In December, vehicle manufacturing stood at 139,203 units, a reduction of 2% compared to the same month of the previous year, due to a 17.9% drop in commercial and industrial vehicles.

The production of electrified vehicles in 2024 accounted for 8.5% of the total production, a decrease of 2.9 percentage points compared to the previous year. In total, 202,555 electrified vehicles were manufactured, a decline of 27.5% compared to 2023. Specifically, in December, there was an increase of 0.6 percentage points in the production share of these vehicles, reaching 8.4%, with a total of 11,667 electrified units manufactured, representing a 5.1% increase compared to the same month of the previous year.

For José López-Tafall, general director of Anfac, "the decline in vehicle production reflects how demanding this transition is for the automotive industry. Spain has a well-established industry and we are a benchmark; although we drop one position in the world ranking to ninth place, we remain the second largest manufacturer in Europe, but we cannot relax, because the competition to lead the race towards electrification is increasingly fierce and demanding."

Regarding vehicle types, although car production increased by 0.6% over the year, reaching 1,918,244 units, the total figure was dragged down by the production of commercial and industrial vehicles, which decreased by 15.8% to 458,260 vehicles. This same trend is reflected in December's figures, when car production increased by 3.1% to 110,718, while industrial and commercial vehicle production decreased by 17.9% compared to the same month in 2023, with 28,485 units.

As for exports, in 2024 a total of 2,123,584 units were sent abroad, representing a reduction of 4% compared to the 2023 figure. This decline was mitigated by December's data, where exports increased by 1.9% to 134,813 units.

Europe remains the primary destination for exports of vehicles manufactured in Spain with a share of 93.1%, which represents an increase of 3.1 percentage points compared to the previous year.

France continues to lead in the first position, increasing its orders by 8.5%, followed by Germany (-1.8%) and the United Kingdom (-4.7%). It is also worth noting, over the year, the increases in exports to Poland (12.1%) and Mexico (6.5%).
