“An astonishing event!” With this headline, the arrival of the Lumière brothers' cinematograph in Alicante was announced, with two sessions held in November 1896. The launch of this device was part of a double "great scientific-artistic-musical evening" at the Teatro Principal in Alicante.
This event, of "extraordinary success," marked the arrival of cinema in the city of Alicante. Leisure shifted from the stage to the big screen, winning public favour. Years and decades later, the city also served as a film set, as it does today in its streets and at the Ciudad de la Luz studios.
The Alicante Municipal Archive has recovered one of these posters, announcing the first cinema session projected in the city at a price of 50 cents, among other offers in pesetas depending on the zone and seat of the coliseum. This gem crowns the new exhibition displayed in its windows and inside the building under the title 'Alicante, a History of Cinema'.
Besides this poster, the exhibition includes photographs, film posters, books, and hand programs from all eras up to the most recent, with a special focus on the 20th century and all the cinemas that existed in Alicante, such as the now-defunct Cine Monumental, next to the Central Market.
The tour offers a large collection of funds from the Alicante Municipal Archive, located on Labradores Street in the old town, along with others from Paco Huesca's collections, such as his film posters, and from the Sánchez Moreno family, a donation of hand programs.
Among the photographs, taken by Francisco Sánchez and Eugenio Bañón, are the visits of Carmen Sevilla in her golden era, along with the history of the Central Cinema in the Rambla - the first to show a sound film in Alicante - the Salón España, later Cine Capital, and the Ideal, among others.
The interior of the Alicante Municipal Archive features a selection of posters of great films donated by Paco Huesca. The exhibition presents the originals of 'King Kong', 'Singin' in the Rain', 'Spartacus', 'The Magnificent Seven', 'The Godfather', 'The Iron Mask', and 'The Last Torch Song'.
Additionally, the exhibition includes dozens of hand programs from cinema since 1939 donated by the Sánchez Moreno family and photographs of actors and actresses from Spanish cinema from the donation of Juan de Mata Moncho Aguirre. There are also books about cinema and its history in Alicante from an architectural and urbanistic point of view related to the research of Juana Balsalobre.
The Councillor for Culture, Nayma Beldjilali, emphasized that this exhibition, 'Alicante, a History of Cinema', "will awaken a nostalgic part by recalling the great cinemas that operated in the city." She also explained that this exhibition from the Municipal Archive "will expand the knowledge of Alicante residents about the history of cinema and its evolution."
