After defeating Levante and Villarreal, Pontevedra, from Segunda RFEF, the fourth tier of Spanish football, also knocked out the current Copa del Rey runner-up, Mallorca, the fifth La Liga team eliminated in this edition of the tournament. The Galician 'giant killer', leading their group in the Segunda Federación, qualified for the Copa del Rey round of 16 for the first time in over half a century, and did so with a resounding 3-0 victory. The last time they reached this stage was in the 1971-72 season, and this Friday they staged another major cup upset against a Mallorca side that was champion in 2003, is sixth in La Liga, and will play the Spanish Super Cup semi-finals against Real Madrid next Friday.
Mallorca, a victim of a superior Pontevedra in their Copa debut, followed in the footsteps of Espanyol, Villarreal, Girona, and Alavés and will not be in the draw for the round of 16 on Wednesday, where Rayo Vallecano, who defeated Racing de Ferrol this Friday, will not be missing. The 'franjirrojo' team also secured a 1-3 victory in A Malata, with a brace from Jorge de Frutos.
Pontevedra overwhelmed Jagoba Arrasate's Mallorca after defeating Levante 4-1 and Villarreal 1-0 in the first round, with a goal in the 87th minute by Dalisson, who opened this Friday's emphatic victory with a stunning goal on the slippery pitch of Pasarón, where the Brazilian put on a show in front of 6,000 fans. The Galician team's thrashing could have been even greater against a disconnected Mallorca, which, however, could have equalized the match half an hour in when Abdón Prats missed a golden opportunity with a lob in a one-on-one with the local goalkeeper.
