Finally, it will not be possible. The striking agreement between the government team of the PP of Alicante and the municipal group Esquerra Unida - Podem that had been waving over the city of Alicante for weeks was broken this Thursday. On the table is the approval of the new waste tax with an increase that in some cases is more than double, a decision that does not come from the municipal government but from the application of a European regulation and that is affecting all municipalities.
In a statement, the municipal group of Esquerra Unida-Podem expressed its dissatisfaction with the negotiation and issued an ultimatum to the government team, as an agreement, to vote in favor of this tax. From the municipal group of Esquerra Unida-Podem they assure that with the cards currently on the table, they consider it unfeasible to reach any agreement with the Popular Party. "Despite their intention to contact our municipal group, the city remains in a dead-end, a situation that is in no way our responsibility," said the municipal spokesperson, Manolo Copé.

They consider that of the 19 amendments they presented, which included excluding vulnerable people from this tax, equitable payment for commerce based on meters and uses, and an increase in the tax on tourist housing, only one has been approved. They thus consider the modification in the waste collection tax brackets insufficient. "The tax still does not differentiate between large companies and families from disadvantaged neighborhoods, which creates an unfair and disproportionate burden on those who have the least. It also does not provide for bonuses beyond the use of the 5th container and in a percentage that, at most, would reach 20%, when other cities contemplate bonuses of up to 50% for families that certify vulnerability, for large families, and for pensioners," explained Copé.
But in addition to the proposals related to the waste tax, the document that the EU has presented to the government team also includes classic demands of the formation such as the repeal of the 'Begging' ordinance -of Civic Coexistence- and others linked to the municipal budgets such as doubling the investment in the Housing Board or in public education centers. They even recover those investments that the PP of Barcala, during its first year in government, agreed with the councilor of Guanayar, Miguel Ángel Pavón, to allow the approval of the budgets.
The proposal also includes another small print, if EU-Podem allows the tax, it does not want the 15 million extra income from the Alicante City Council to go to projects agreed with Vox in the State budgets. The formation has thus linked the negotiation of the tax with that of the municipal budgets for the year 2025, and includes in its proposal that the accounts cannot be agreed with any other political formation.
"We reiterate that Esquerra Unida Podem is far from supporting the waste tax. If the PP wants to continue with the policies signed with VOX, it is logical that they count on the votes of the far-right. Esquerra Unida Podem will only support a change of course that includes a 180-degree turn in municipal policies, recognizing the real problems facing the majority of citizens and implementing measures to solve them," they highlighted from the formation.
With this, the PP is left without options to approve this waste tax, a modification that if not applied could result in high fines for the city of Alicante.
