EU-Podem, the municipal group in Alicante City Council, has claimed that the elevator at the Isla de Cuba Social Centre "has been out of order for more than a month and a half" and "without any action from the government team to fix it," labelling the situation as "neglect" of the infrastructure.

In a statement, they assert that "this malfunction is severely affecting many elderly people, those with reduced mobility, or physical difficulties who visit this centre for social services appointments, community activities, and even to receive podiatry services located on the third floor."

EU-Podem spokesperson Manolo Copé considers it "unacceptable" that "a reference centre for social welfare in the neighbourhoods is in such conditions." "This neglect by the PP once again demonstrates the abandonment of public services in Alicante," he added.

In this regard, Copé stated that "those who most need institutional support face architectural barriers that violate their right to access on equal terms."

For all these reasons, EU-Podem demands "the immediate repair of the elevator, as well as an urgent audit of the maintenance status of the city's social centres." "It is unacceptable that elderly people have to forgo their medical appointments or activities because the City Council is not doing its job," Copé added.

In this context, the coalition has announced that it "will request written information from the Infrastructure and Social Welfare department to understand the reasons for the delay in repairs and whether alternative accessibility measures have been implemented."

"This is not an isolated incident; it is a constant in the PP's policy: neglect of public services, as seen with the repair of elevators in public schools, lack of planning, and disregard for those who need it most," Copé concluded.
