Kia Corporation (Kia) has developed the first car accessory made from plastic extracted from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch (GPGP) by The Ocean Cleanup. This launch, a world first, marks a milestone in its long-term collaboration with The Ocean Cleanup. Since 2022, Kia has supported this non-profit organization dedicated to refining and scaling technologies to remove plastic from the oceans.
The Korean brand will introduce a limited edition trunk liner for the new Kia EV3, made with ocean plastic provided by The Ocean Cleanup. So far, it is one of the most significant outcomes of the partnership. This exclusive accessory will be available for the EV3 in selected markets and can be ordered as soon as this model is on sale.
Charles Ryu, Executive Vice President and Head of the Global Brand and Customer Experience Division at Kia, commented: "This partnership is not only a testament to our shared commitment to environmental care and innovation, but also a global drive to create cleaner and healthier oceans for future generations."
"As Kia's first genuine accessory made with recovered ocean plastic, we are proud to see tangible progress towards creating a circular resource system for ocean plastic. We will leverage the lessons learned during the recycling and product development process to continue making useful and beneficial items for our customers with ocean plastic recovered by The Ocean Cleanup."
Inspired by the brand's "Opposites United" design philosophy, the pattern on the top surface of the trunk liner, featuring "geometric waves," resembles the waves and the flow of debris towards a collection zone, a reference to The Ocean Cleanup's process for extracting marine plastic. Made with 40% recycled ocean plastic*, the high-quality trunk protector is as durable, resilient, and functional as a conventional one. Additionally, it includes a QR code that provides customers with detailed information about the product development and partnership, as well as The Ocean Cleanup logo.
Since the beginning of this collaboration in 2022, Kia and The Ocean Cleanup have worked to find innovative ways to transform plastic waste from the GPGP into durable and practical products. Due to the unique qualities of ocean plastic captures, the first phase involves sorting, recycling, and processing it to meet Kia's strict quality standards.
Unlike the so-called Ocean Bound Plastic (waste located less than 50 km from the coasts where management is poor or non-existent), Ocean Cleanup captures consist exclusively of materials already in the ocean, making recycling difficult. This means the plastic must undergo the Chain of Custody Standard to verify its traceability and material integrity.
