Pharmacies in Alicante to Warn About Heatwaves During Summer Months
Official colleges in the Community will send alerts to each establishment to protect vulnerable populations

Pharmacies in the province of Alicante and the rest of the Community will serve as indicators of heatwaves. The establishments will alert vulnerable populations about high temperatures during the summer months.
This initiative, within the framework of the agreement with the Department of Health, is part of the campaign 'Against extreme heat, your pharmacy cares for you', launched by the Valencian Council of Pharmacists, composed of the official colleges of each province.
Thus, the three official colleges of each province will send alerts to pharmacies about the health risk level to reduce the impact associated with high temperatures. This way, pharmacists can inform patients in municipalities affected by heatwaves.
Extreme Temperature Monitoring System
The three colleges will enable a section on their respective websites that will redirect to the Public Health page of the Extreme Temperature Monitoring System in the Community. This aims to inform pharmacists so they know firsthand which health advice might be most suitable for their patients, against high daytime and nighttime temperatures. All this will be grouped within the Program for the Prevention and Care of Health Problems Derived from Extreme Temperatures of the Department of Health.
This alert campaign is an early warning system that allows for preventive actions to protect the population from health risks derived from heat. Especially the most vulnerable populations such as children, the elderly, pregnant women, chronic patients, and people with cardiovascular, respiratory, and mental conditions, among others.
The official colleges and pharmacies will launch the alert campaign to inform about heatwaves from May 16 to September 15, when they will also convey recommendations from health authorities.
More actions against heat
The Valencian Council of Pharmacists will also distribute infographics related to the campaign so that each pharmacy can distribute them in their municipality. These address relevant topics such as advice on sun protection, cooling down during heatwaves, and smart hydration.
The infographics will explain the role of the pharmaceutical professional during heatwaves, as well as what to do if a child suffers from heatstroke.
Recommendations
Among the most suggested recommendations by Valencian pharmacists is the use of sun protection every two hours of sun exposure and thirty minutes before leaving home. This way, the body will be better protected, especially after swimming or sweating.
They also highlight that one should dress in light, loose, and light-colored clothing, as well as use a cap or hat and approved sunglasses.
