No second part of the trial against Dominique Pelicot will occur. The man sentenced to 20 years in prison for drugging his wife over a decade to allow other men to violate her will not appeal the verdict issued this month by a court in Avignon, unlike other men also charged in this case, his lawyer, Béatrice Zavarro, has informed.
His lawyer explained that her client believes an appeal would mean 'a new ordeal' for his ex-wife, Gisele Pelicot, who 'was never his enemy'. 'He considers that legally, it's time to move on,' Zavarro explained in an interview this Monday on Franceinfo.
Dominique, aged 72, is considered the mastermind of an abuse network that brought 51 men to trial. The court sentenced them on December 19 to prison terms ranging from three to 20 years, at the end of a process that is not final and is still subject to appeals—more than 15 defendants have already appealed, and the rest have until this Monday to do so.
The victim decided that all hearings should be public, and her lawyers already indicated after the verdict that Gisèle Pelicot 'is not afraid' of a second trial. After the verdict was read, the woman stated she did not regret facing the situation for months, confident that at least her case could help other victims and change the social perception of these abuses.
