The province of Castellón has become a reference point for bicycle enthusiasts. The northernmost province of the Valencian Community offers a diversity of landscapes and a rich culture, making it an ideal destination for both road and mountain cycling. A perfect setting complemented by the mild Mediterranean climate throughout most of the year, ideal for cycling.
Especially for mountain bikers, Castellón's tracks and trails offer a wide range of alternatives given the rugged terrain filled with natural parks and unique natural environments. In this setting lies the Transcastelló Route, a circular route of over 500 kilometers that traverses both mountains and plains, providing a unique experience for cyclists of all levels. A route that not only allows you to discover nature in its purest form but also to explore the historical and cultural heritage of the small villages scattered across its regions.
Under the auspices of the Castellón Tourism Board, the Transcastelló Route was created with the aim of promoting cycle tourism in the province and encouraging sustainable interaction with the natural environment. To achieve this, a route was designed to connect major areas of natural and cultural interest, making it not just a sporting challenge but also an opportunity to discover the province's best-kept secrets.
This journey is designed to be accessible to cyclists of all physical conditions. Despite having a predetermined route, this trail does not have a fixed start and end point; instead, it can be started and finished at any of its passage points, allowing each athlete to choose to cover just one stage, link several stages together, or, for the more experienced, complete it in its entirety.
Additionally, there are numerous services along the route that enhance the cyclist's experience. From rural accommodations to bicycle repair workshops, Castellón province is well-prepared to welcome cycling enthusiasts. Local support, combined with the growing popularity of cycle tourism, has established the Transcastelló Route as one of the main tourist attractions in this privileged Mediterranean area. All this while passing through areas of high natural and scenic value such as Desert de les Palmes near Castellón and Benicàssim, the Irta, Valldangel, and Espadáb mountain ranges, Els Ports region or Penyagolosa massif among others.
Thus, the Transcastelló Route offers a wide range of possibilities for cyclists who want to enjoy a simple day trip or embark on a true adventure. This can be tackled without problems and without carrying bulky and heavy luggage thanks to the numerous towns it passes through, offering all kinds of services and amenities.
However, despite not having a fixed start and finish point, it is possible to outline a series of stages to cover. These stages do not have their own signage but can be followed through a track that completes an attractive circular route. Thus, given its free nature that allows cyclists to tackle it autonomously, each user can decide where to start this adventure in a personalized way.
Taking Benicàssim as a hypothetical starting point, the Transcastelló Route heads into the heart of the province towards towns like La Pobla Tornesa, Vilafamés or San Joan de Moró in the Plana Alta region. This first section is characterized by its gentleness with slight slopes and landscapes becoming more rugged as you move towards the mountains.
This is something cyclists will gradually encounter on their way to Ribesalbes, Toga and Fuentes de Ayódar heading towards inland Castellón before turning north towards Zucaina. Here cyclists will already find themselves immersed in Alto Mijares with Penyagolosa peaks as their next reference point.
From here onwards, the route continues northwards through Vistabella del Maestrat,Villafranca del Cid,and Morella,a must-stop destination,to enjoy one of Castellón’s most picturesque villages,in an unparalleled setting, and exquisite cuisine.
On their way back to coast, the adventurers will pass through Catí,Tirig or Sant Mateu already within Bajo Maestrazgo region heading towards Peñíscola,to pedal again along Mediterranean until Alcossebre. From there, the route returns inland passing through Coves de Vinromà,Vilanova d'Alcolea, and Cabanes, before heading back again towards Benicassim.
An adventure tailored for each cyclist presenting itself as best invitation discovering diverse province rich history, culture, nature through varied routes, trails making Transcastelló Route reference point every cycling enthusiast.
