Mountain biking has gained significant prominence among the various sports enthusiasts, with Els Ports being a particularly charming location for this two-wheeled adventure.
Located in the northernmost part of the province's interior, this region is home to natural and scenic treasures, offering a myriad of alternatives for all types of mountain bike users, along with exceptional historical, cultural, and gastronomic heritage.
In this setting, some landmarks shine brightly, such as Morella, the ideal starting point for exploring the Els Ports region by bike. This city, renowned for its imposing castle and medieval walls, is not only rich in history and culture but also a hub for active tourism on wheels, offering a variety of routes from forest tracks to the most technical trails.
The unique and magical urban center of Morella serves as the start and end of a series of circular routes tailored to various cyclist profiles. For those who wish to enjoy breathtaking views without too much effort, there is a route that covers several panoramic points offering unparalleled views of Morella and its surroundings. With an approximate distance of 20 kilometers and a low to medium difficulty, this outing starts from the center of Morella with the Ermita de Santa Llúcia as the first destination.
This small sanctuary, located on a hill, offers a panoramic view of the entire city and the mountainous surroundings. The journey continues along well-marked rural paths, making it an excellent option for cyclists of all levels, especially those looking for a more relaxed ride.
Another option starting and ending in Morella is the route to Pobla d'Alcolea. This time, the distance increases to 35 kilometers, as does the difficulty and duration, ranging from three to four hours of pedaling. Along the way, cyclists will encounter varied terrain, including forest tracks, dirt roads, and technical sections on narrow trails. The panoramic views of the surrounding valleys and mountains are simply spectacular. It is an ideal route for those seeking a moderate challenge, combining physical effort with rewarding landscapes.
The so-called Volta als Tres Pobles raises the bar a bit in terms of mileage (50 kilometers) and duration (around four and a half hours), in a circular route connecting the towns of Morella, Forcall, and Cinctorres via ancient paths and rugged trails. It all begins with a simple route alongside the Bergantes River to Forcall, until, from the Sarañana hermitage, the path becomes more challenging, leading to Cinctorres with enough strength to enjoy the stunning views over the Celumbres ravine and the impressive rock walls that are part of the landscape.
For more experienced mountain bikers, Els Ports offers routes that test technical skills and endurance. One of the most challenging routes is the Senda del Barranc de la Pegunta, starting in the charming village of Vallibona. The route delves into the Tinença de Benifassà Natural Park and includes steep ascents, technical descents, and narrow passages that require a good dose of skill and experience. The views from the Barranc de la Pegunta are breathtaking, with rocky walls, lush pine forests, and a great diversity of birds of prey soaring above. It is a route that rewards cyclists with an adventurous spirit.
In the same vein of challenge, the Ruta a Les Pobles presents nearly 60 kilometers of cycling starting from the Fábrica Giner in Morella, passing through impressive rock walls in the municipality of Forcall, a small town known for its medieval square and traditional festivals, and a meeting point of three river courses. Other points of interest in the Els Ports region include the Muela Garumba, the Muela de la Vila, and the Muela de Todolella.
Morella and Els Ports are destinations that not only offer stunning natural landscapes but also the opportunity to enjoy mountain biking routes that cater to all levels of experience. From relaxed rides with panoramic views to extreme challenges on technical trails, this region is a true paradise for cyclists. Additionally, the rich cultural heritage and hospitality of the towns make each route a unique experience that goes beyond mere sport.
