Palmeiras became the first team to reach the quarter-finals of the Club World Cup. The 1-0 victory against their fellow Brazilian side, Botafogo, was hard-fought, requiring extra time to settle the contest. The tension and rivalry between the two teams were evident, with a physical game and high intensity in every ball action. The final result was fair to Verdão, who played nearly ten minutes with one player less.
From the start of the match, the 'alviverde' team took the initiative. The danger came from former Barcelona player Vitor Roque. Tigrinho was not sharp in front of goal, but Botafogo also failed to threaten Weverton. The superiority of individual talents decided the match, with Paulinho scoring the lone winning goal in extra time. The expulsion of Palmeiras captain Gustavo Gómez added some tension at the end. He will serve a suspension in the next round, which will be a significant loss for Abel Ferreira.
The Club World Cup continues to surprise with the excellent form of Brazilian teams. All four participants advanced to the knockout stage, and at least one is now among the tournament's top eight teams. What was expected to be a total European dominance is far from reality, and the Old Continent's teams will have to work hard to overcome the Brazilians.
Botafogo had been the tournament's revelation after qualifying from the group of death with PSG and Atlético de Madrid. Their elimination came sooner than expected after an impressive group stage. Now, the surprise team status has been taken by Palmeiras, who are performing at a higher level than anticipated.
