The President of Castilla-La Mancha, Emiliano García-Page, has called on the Popular Party (PP) and its deputies in Congress to support the spending cap proposed by the Government as a preliminary step towards securing a majority that will approve the General State Budgets. He warned that if they do not, autonomous communities and municipalities governed by 'popular' parties will also be adversely affected. "There are times in life when one must take a stand."
In an open address from the town of Madrigueras in Albacete, he made this "appeal to the opposition, especially to the PP," urging them not to veto the spending cap, as "one cannot demand policies later if those policies are not reflected in the budget."
"If they do not support the spending limits that the State can afford, they will prevent progress in social policies," he said.
At this point, he noted that even if the State Budgets do not pass, the Government of Castilla-La Mancha will not make "any cuts" in social policies. "This is my commitment, but obviously we cannot sustain it indefinitely."
While he considers it "essential" in politics for the opposition to "clash with the Government," he added that this does not preclude them from also finding common ground.
A PP vote against the spending cap would be "a provocation" leading to "social cuts," so he insisted on calling for responsibility and avoiding a situation where "Madrid puts a stopper" on these social policies.
"Therefore, I call for a broader perspective. To rise above party interests. Do not put a clamp on the wheels," he concluded.
