Rico Pérez is currently a hotbed of tension, as the future of Rubén Torrecilla at the helm of Hércules remains uncertain despite having another year on his contract. The decision will be made in one or several meetings between the Extremaduran coach, sporting director Paco Peña, and owner Enrique Ortiz.

The mistrust between Torrecilla and Peña has been brewing for months, exacerbated by the winter transfer window's misfortunes. The injury of Yanis Senhadji during his debut, the young forward expected to make a difference in the promotion race, was a significant blow. Joel Arumí, a full-back who failed to impress Torrecilla, has been the subject of the coach's persistent criticism in recent months.

With the disappointment of being almost out of the promotion race with three matches left (all at Rico Pérez), Torrecilla's criticisms have intensified. In the immediate aftermath of the Villarreal match, he urged the club to "get its act together" and assemble a squad "worthy of the badge." Torrecilla's lack of self-criticism irked not only Peña but also the players, who confronted the coach hours later to demand explanations, asserting their commitment and identification with the club.

In Friday's press conference, Torrecilla attempted to calm the situation, resorting to clichés: he is happy in Alicante, Hércules is the biggest club in the Primera RFEF, and he wants to fulfil his contract. However, he also displayed his outsized ego by publicly claiming that Enrique Ortiz has returned to Rico Pérez (even to Santa Faz and the streets, literally) thanks to him.

All parties involved in this saga are eager for the season to end so they can lay their cards on the table and calmly assess the future. However, at Rico Pérez, they also understand that starting a season with a coach shrouded in doubt is a recipe for disaster. This was the case recently with Lluís Planagumà and previously with Juan Carlos Mandiá or José Bordalás. Everyone must row in the same direction, or steering the ship forward is impossible. Time will tell.
