A mere four days before the 'hippies' of the Esplanade must remove their stalls, the options for the group to obtain an extension of the moratorium that would allow them to stay a little longer in their current location, until everything is ready to move to the new site, are running out.
The merchants have presented nearly 40,000 signatures collected at their stalls and through the digital platform Change.org. They demand that the deadline be extended until the new location is granted and enabled for the new market.
The sector does not oppose the government's proposal to move to the Postiguet breakwater behind the Hotel Meliá, a location that requires the acceptance of the Coasts and the Port. "In theory, the City Council has already submitted it in writing to Coasts, which has already started the file, but there will be a period for objections," explains the spokesperson for the merchants, Lucía Ramelló.

Although both administrations have shown themselves favorable, the adaptation of the space and the processing of permits will be necessary, making it difficult for the move to occur before the end of 2024. If the moratorium is not granted, the merchants will have to close their stalls until then.
That is why they have requested this moratorium and hoped that a proposal to the plenary session by Esquerra Unida-Podem, joined by PSOE and Compromís, would allow the extension of the moratorium for a few more months.
However, this Monday, the plenary secretary informed the opposition that the motion will not be on the agenda of the plenary session. Another blow for the merchants who hoped to find support from political groups in the meeting to be held next Thursday, October 31.

the maximum deadline to vacate the Esplanade
With this, the options for the 'hippies' of the Esplanade are running out, who for now do not plan to dismantle the stalls, waiting for what might happen in the plenary session. The left-wing groups have already announced that they have requested the report from the plenary secretary and will present, with the necessary modifications, an urgent motion on this matter.
The decision of the plenary secretary has not pleased the sector, who received it with disappointment on their faces. The 'hippies' hoped for this possibility to extend the moratorium until the new location is fully guaranteed. They fear that once the stalls are removed, the processing of the new location may also be rejected - due to amendments or technical reasons - and it will be necessary to start looking for locations again, which would lead these merchants to spend a long time without working.
The left-wing opposition has already requested the plenary secretary to clarify the reasons for rejecting this motion. The groups explain that in other cases, the rejection is made on the same day of the presentation and it had never reached the Board of Spokespersons to announce that an initiative was not included.
In this regard, the group promoting the initiative, EU-Podem, has highlighted that the only explanation given is that to modify or revoke a plenary agreement, it is necessary to prepare documents and files and that "there was not enough time." An explanation that the councilor finds insufficient.
The spokespersons of PSOE, Compromís, and EU-Podem met this Monday with councilor Cristina Cutanda with the intention of achieving a moratorium that extends until the move is possible or at least six months. "We trust in reaching a minimum agreement. We do not understand why in such a common-sense issue as this, they do not roll up their sleeves to find a definitive solution as quickly as possible," Copé highlighted.
For her part, socialist councilor Trini Amorós has accused the mayor, Luis Barcala, of "bad faith in delaying the communication of the inadmissibility of the initiative." "Barcala has no word. If we have reached this situation, it is because the mayor has not wanted to solve a problem that the government team itself has generated. The request for the moratorium should have been promoted by Barcala himself. However, we are the opposition who are most concerned about ensuring the continuity of commercial activity in the Esplanade market with all guarantees," the councilor highlighted.
Compromís spokesperson Rafa Mas has insisted that "we have been warning for some time, the Popular Party is turning the Alicante City Council into their estate." The nationalist councilor criticized "the disappearance" of this proposal, while others remain, such as "asking for the resignation of the President of the Government or calling for general elections or always talking about Bildu, Puigdemont, and Catalonia, when in the plenary they do not fit because they should talk about Alicante's issues." "We find it very serious and it is an alleged fraud within this City Council," concluded the councilor.
