Those who want something must work for it. Niza Avenue is currently in disarray at the start of the high bathing season due to the renovation works on the promenade, surprising many tourists and locals visiting San Juan Beach for the first time.
As a result of these works, the promenade narrows at certain points where construction is ongoing or lacks pavement. This undoubtedly causes inconvenience to visitors of this iconic Alicante location.
The City Council awarded the rehabilitation of Niza Avenue to Vías y Construcciones S.A. at the end of July, with the condition that work would begin after the summer to avoid clashing with the 2024 bathing season.
These works commenced in September with a nine-month execution period, and despite appearances, "deadlines are being met," stated government spokesperson Manuel Villar on Tuesday. "The goal is to finish before summer," added the deputy mayor, "and by summer, I mean July," as initially planned.
The primary aim of this project is to provide a unified design for the promenade and enhance user comfort. This is the last section to be redeveloped and conditioned.
The works include the renovation of the deteriorated pedestrian pavement and its appearance, introducing new seating and recreational areas with vegetation, and improving beach accessibility.
The scope of work, approximately 925 meters long, coincides with the section of Niza Avenue between Ireland Street and the municipal boundary with El Campello, completing the coastal facade arrangement of San Juan Beach and complementing similar works between Brussels Avenue and Ireland Street.
The comprehensive intervention will include work on the pavement, the wall separating the promenade from the beach, and existing furniture. Additionally, quality elements will be incorporated to modernize this space, in line with the first phase rehabilitation.
Regarding accessibility, the project establishes a single gradient to facilitate drainage towards the beach sand, eliminating unnecessary drains. The promenade's palm trees will be preserved, and efforts will be made to improve and condition the tree pits, along with adding more vegetation.
Parallel to the redevelopment of the last section of the promenade, a project to install a sports super space, valued at 1.8 million euros and with a six-month execution period, is planned.
Specifically, four prefabricated locker room modules with a minimum capacity of six people and a maximum of 12 people, equipped with toilets and showers, will be installed, along with a storage module for sports equipment, including nautical items, kayaks, SUPs, oars, and general beach sports materials.
They will be located in an area currently used for parking, where the Summer Craft Market was previously situated before its relocation to the start of the promenade.
