Hundreds of cars destined for scrap have been piling up for several days in the municipality of Muro, bordering a protected area. These vehicles originate from the area devastated by the DANA, as reported by the environmental group La Carrasca-Ecologistes en Acció, which warns of the significant environmental risk this poses. This situation is expected to continue at least through the weekend, as the Council plans to begin removal starting next Monday.

According to the environmentalists, the area where these vehicles are temporarily deposited is "completely unsuitable," as it is located in a common rural forest area, about 20 meters from the Riu d'Agres and adjacent to the Protected Landscape of Serpis and the Municipal Natural Area Font del Baladre-Fontanars-Riu d'Agres. "Moreover, according to the cartographic viewer of the Generalitat Valenciana, the land has medium to high permeability; it is also partially in a flood risk zone," they explain.

The cars are located about 20 meters from the Agres River and bordering the Protected Landscape of Serpis

The environmental risk arises from the fluids and contaminating elements contained in the vehicles, such as gasoline, diesel, engine oils, antifreeze, coolants, brake fluids, batteries, etc. "The appropriate place for them would be an authorized treatment center, like the one the owner or tenant of the land has less than a kilometer away," explains La Carrasca.

“Solidarity is no excuse”

"Solidarity cannot be used as an excuse to do things wrong, by placing vehicles next to the river, in a clearly sensitive area, creating a new danger for nature and people. It has been more than two months since the flood, and provisional locations should have already been found to safely store the vehicles until they can be properly treated, thus avoiding unnecessary transportation, which increases risks," the environmentalists explain.

The most feared scenario in this case would be rain, which could cause the pollutants to be washed into the river; "there is also the risk of fire, which would pose a significant health risk to the population, located less than 200 meters away," the same sources explain.

In response to the Council's announcement to remove the cars starting this Monday, La Carrasca requests that in the meantime, control be tightened, and that the land be analyzed to rule out soil contamination and, if necessary, that decontamination be carried out.
