Following the electrical blackout affecting the entirety of Spain, the reactors at nuclear power plants that were operational until early morning (Almaraz II, Ascó I and II, Vandellós II) have automatically shut down. Their diesel safeguard generators have started, ensuring the plants remain in a safe condition.

The Nuclear Safety Council (CSN) has indicated that the nuclear operators have reported the declaration of a pre-alert emergency situation due to the loss of external electrical supply, according to a statement issued by the regulatory body responsible for nuclear safety in Spain.

In response to the loss of external electrical supply to the nuclear park, the reactors at Almaraz II, Ascó I and II, Vandellós II have automatically shut down, and their diesel generators have started, while maintaining the plants in a safe condition, according to the CSN, which emphasizes that this incident has had no impact on workers, the public, or the environment.

Additionally, the diesel generators at the Almaraz I, Cofrentes, and Trillo plants (which were in a shutdown state prior to this situation) have started as designed and are in a safe condition.

The Nuclear Safety Council has activated its Emergency Response Organisation in mode 1 (monitoring) and has notified this situation to the Directorate General of Civil Protection and Emergencies, the National Security Directorate, and the various Government Sub-delegations in the provinces where the nuclear plants are located.
