Nissan already has over 10,000 electric vehicles on the road in the country, representing an annual saving of 17,500 tonnes of CO₂ emissions, equivalent to the absorption capacity of a forest with half a million trees.
Electrifying the vehicle fleet is a priority for Nissan, which last year surpassed 80% of its sales in Spain with electrified models and aims to reach 85% by 2025.
"Spain needs to accelerate electrification, and to this end, Nissan has proposed a fiscal reform to lower VAT on electric vehicles and a State Pact to boost electrification," stated Christian Costaganna, CEO of Nissan in Spain, citing the Norwegian model as a success story.
The company is strengthening its commitment to sustainability in Spain, not only through a growing fleet of electrified vehicles but also with intensive industrial activity that minimises its environmental impact.
Beyond its vehicles, Nissan promotes a more sustainable environment through circular economy practices, the use of sustainable materials, and the recycling of vehicles at the end of their life cycle. Locally, it collaborates with partners such as Endesa, Zunder, Acciona, and Beplanet to reuse batteries from electric cars like the Nissan LEAF.
The commitment to electrification will be reinforced this year with the arrival of two new 100% electric vehicles, the Nissan Micra and a new version of the Nissan LEAF, as well as the "step 2" of the exclusive e-POWER hybrid technology.
Nissan's plants in Spain, located in Ávila and Cantabria, are also at the forefront of sustainability. Through various actions, they have managed to prevent the emission of over 800 tonnes of CO₂, equivalent to planting 33,000 trees.
Javier Vila, General Director of Nissan's Industrial Operations in Spain, highlighted: "Our plants are committed to environmental care through circular economy actions, energy efficiency, and emission reduction."
In Ávila, the plant has invested in machinery to recycle over 11 tonnes of plastic, reused 118 tonnes of metal, and reduced energy consumption by more than 685,000 kWh annually through the optimisation of air conditioning and lighting systems and solar self-consumption. An example is the replacement of phosphating with oxsilan technology, which has saved nearly 4,000 m³ of water and avoided 12 tonnes of hazardous waste.
Meanwhile, the Cantabria factory, recognised with the Integrated Environmental Authorisation, avoided the emission of 500 tonnes of CO₂ in 2024 thanks to the optimisation of its facilities and reused over 7,500 tonnes of foundry sand in cement plants, a 13% increase in recycling. Both centres are certified with ISO 14001:2015.
