Israel's Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, has described the initial phase of the agreement with Hamas as a 'temporary ceasefire'. Just hours before the truce is set to commence at 8:30 AM (7:30 AM in Spain) this Sunday, the Israeli leader made his first statements about the pact, emphasizing that his country will not rest until 'all military objectives are achieved', including the return of all hostages.
Netanyahu asserts that both the President-elect of the United States, Donald Trump, and his predecessor Joe Biden have authorized him to resume fighting in the Strip if subsequent phases of the agreement are halted. Furthermore, he claims that Washington has committed to supplying Israel with all necessary weaponry to return to the fight 'in new ways and with great power'.
The Israeli government has once again clashed with the militia this Saturday, which many analysts interpret as an operation by the Prime Minister to demonstrate that he controls the timing. In a statement from his office, Netanyahu stated that 'we will not proceed' with the agreement until 'we receive a list of the hostages to be released, as agreed'. According to the draft of the pact, Hamas should provide the identities of the first three hostages to be released this Sunday at least 24 hours in advance. However, it has not done so. The exchange for prisoners is scheduled for four in the afternoon, and a delay is not ruled out. In any case, the Prime Minister emphasized that 'Israel will not tolerate violations of the agreement' and added that 'the sole responsibility lies with Hamas'.
The dissonance, in any case, does not seem likely to go too far. No more than a delay in the exchange. The Executive approved the ceasefire agreement on Saturday, and the United States is directly pressuring Netanyahu to ensure the exchange takes place this Sunday, just on the eve of Donald Trump's inauguration. The families of the captives have also urged the Prime Minister to see the agreement through to the end and 'declare that the war is over'. To the new US President, the families ask to 'remain vigilant' and ensure that the pact 'is fully implemented and does not fall apart'.
Meanwhile, the Defence Forces claim they have already completed their preparations to receive the released hostages. They have established three complexes near the border, at the Re'im base, the Kerem Shalom crossing, and the Erez crossing. There, a setup with doctors and psychologists will await them. They will then be escorted to Israeli hospitals where their families will be waiting.
The army has also issued a warning to the Palestinian population not to approach areas of the Strip where troops will be deployed this Sunday. 'Do not approach IDF troops in the area until further notice. If you approach them, you will be exposed to danger,' a military spokesperson has broadcast on social media.
