Nearly 459,000 vehicles, 28% of the total registered in the province of Valencia, are located in areas affected by the DANA floods, according to a report published this Tuesday by the technology company Solera.
Of all these, 61% are over 10 years old, meaning they usually only have third-party coverage. However, the Insurance Compensation Consortium will cover any vehicle with an active policy, regardless of whether it is comprehensive or third-party.
Nevertheless, especially for newer vehicles (which make up 17% of the fleet in the affected areas in the province of Valencia), policyholders should check if they have any improvement clauses in their contracts. This means that a vehicle, which depreciates every year, can recover part of that lost value, up to 20-30% depending on what is agreed, in addition to the valuation made of the car according to the tables of the corresponding entities.
However, given the age of the fleet, many cars will be written off as the cost of repairs would exceed their market value, which can be as low as 1,000 euros for many vehicles.
Moreover, it is not only necessary to consider those that suffered body damage, but also those that have been flooded even if they are externally immaculate, due to damage suffered by the electronic control units, as, for example, a car between five and ten years old can have between 25 and 35 control units.
Additionally, up to 93% of the vehicles registered in the most affected municipalities are in the hands of private owners, compared to 4.4% of companies, 2.3% of leasing, and 0.4% of 'rent a car'.
Regarding the car brands registered in the region, Ford is the majority manufacturer, with just over 61,000 vehicles sold, 13.4% of the total. They are followed by Peugeot and Citroën, with 9% each of the total.
In the municipalities considered as the "Ground Zero" of the catastrophe, the vehicle fleet as of January 1, 2024, according to data provided by MSI, is: Alaquàs (18,173), Albal (10,478), Aldaia (19,774), Alfafar (11,969), Algemesí (17,178), Benetússer (8,509), Catarroja (19,572), Llocnou de la Corona (124), Massanassa (7,141), Paiporta (15,049), Picaña (7,367), Sedaví (7,547), Utiel (7,055) and the La Torre neighborhood of the city of Valencia (471,015, total figure for the entire capital of Turia).
Thus, the report ensures that all insurance compensations will be carried out by the Insurance Compensation Consortium, which depends on the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Business, because the storm and its material consequences are classified as "extraordinary risks".
