Nearly 36,000 young Europeans aged 18 will receive free train tickets to travel across Europe, as announced by the European Commission this Wednesday. This initiative is part of the 'Discover EU' programme, launched in 2018 to promote cultural exchange among young Europeans.
Specifically, out of the 135,000 applicants, Brussels has selected 35,762 young people who will benefit from the programme to explore Europe, its history, and culture through train journeys, allowing them to meet other European teenagers.
The initiative distributes free tickets for group travel of up to five people, primarily by train, except for young people from remote areas or where access is necessarily through other means of transport.
For this edition, journeys can be made between March 2025 and May 2026. Participants had to pass a questionnaire on EU matters.
The programme is described as a "life-changing experience." "Every station, every café, every new face you meet adds to your story. You don't just see Europe; you experience it," stated Glenn Micallef, Commissioner for Intergenerational Equity, Youth, Culture, and Sport, urging young people to "make the most of the opportunity."
