The "Vehicle Periodic Technical Inspection Sticker" is given to the driver once the ITV is successfully passed. It must then be placed in a visible location. For vehicles with a windshield, the sticker should be placed on the upper right corner from the inside, to minimize obstruction of the driver's view. For motorcycles, it should be placed in a clearly visible spot.
According to AECA-ITV, the information circulating on social media claiming that it is no longer necessary to place the sticker on the windshield is a myth. The regulations regarding the inspection have not changed in this respect, and it remains mandatory to correctly place the sticker on the car's windshield.
The Spanish Association of Collaborating Entities of the Administration in the Technical Inspection of Vehicles (AECA-ITV) clarifies that in 2025, the use of the ITV sticker will still be mandatory. Not displaying it on the vehicle is considered a minor traffic infraction, which could result in a €100 fine for the driver.
The regulation concerning the ITV sticker is contained in the General Vehicle Regulations, approved by Royal Decree 2822/1998, dated December 23 (Annex XI signals on vehicles). Any modification to this regulation would require a legal norm of the same or higher rank, such as a Royal Decree, which is not currently planned.
AECA-ITV further explains that the ITV sticker, according to the General Vehicle Regulations, is called V-19 and its main purpose is to allow authorities to easily determine if the vehicle's ITV is valid. "It is not just a simple adhesive. It holds the same importance as other official vehicle documents," adds Guillermo Magaz, managing director of AECA-ITV.
The ITV sticker can be yellow, red, or green. Its colour indicates the year in which the vehicle's ITV expires, allowing authorities to quickly assess whether the technical inspection is current. Hence, it is crucial to display only the valid ITV sticker, removing all previous inspection stickers.
The calendar follows a specific order, with each colour assigned to a particular year. For example, green stickers correspond to ITVs expiring in 2025, 2028, 2031. Yellow ones will expire in 2026, 2029, 2032. Red ones expire in 2027, 2030, 2033.
The sticker also includes other information about the vehicle. The most prominent detail is the year of ITV expiration, displayed as the last two digits.
Roman numerals indicating the month of expiration are also present, with the relevant month perforated before being issued by the inspector. Additionally, the ITV station number that conducted the inspection and the emblem of the autonomous community where it is located are identified.
