Mutxamel has kicked off its 'Mig Any' of the Moors and Christians festivals. The celebrations will begin on February 16th with the paella, 'all i oli', and 'zurra' contest, which returns to the market square following last year's success. At 10:30, breakfast will be served for the festival-goers, prepared annually by the Commission of Moors and Christians Festivals. Around 1:30 PM, the jury (comprising festival officials, the mayor, the festival councillor, and the Commission president) will start tasting the garlic and 'zurra'.

At 2 PM, the presentation of the paellas will take place, followed by the tasting of the various paellas made by each parade group. Once the contest concludes, the winners will be announced.

The following week, events move to the 'Casal Fester' with the Salon Games Tournament on Wednesday, February 19th. As every year, the Commission wishes to show solidarity, and on Friday, February 21st, a blood donation will be held at the 'Casal de la 3ª edad'. Saturday will be the day of the parade groups, where all groups will march along Carlos Soler Avenue.

From there, religious events take the stage: on February 27th, the dawn ceremony in honour of the Virgin of Loreto will occur, and on Friday, February 28th, the Festive Music Concert and Festive Music Composition Contest will take place. For Francisco Poveda, president of the Commission of Moors and Christians Festivals of Mutxamel, "it is yet another demonstration of how much we cherish festive music in Mutxamel; without it, we cannot comprehend the festival."

March 1st is the grand day of the Mare de Deu de Loreto. At 11:15 AM, the Offering to the Virgin of Loreto will take place, followed by a mass and the procession in the afternoon. The next day, Saturday, March 2nd, a memorial mass for deceased festival-goers will be held at the Municipal Cemetery, and on March 8th, the traditional "Bessá" will occur.

For the president, these events are "to enjoy the music, the festival, and to forget all the problems for a while." Additionally, the Commission appeals to the good conduct of the festival-goers to ensure all events proceed peacefully and orderly.

Creation of a New Parade Group

In addition to presenting all the 'Mig Any' events, the assembly voted on the inclusion of a new parade group called 'Andaluces'. A total of 2,603 festival-goers were eligible to vote, with 434 casting their votes. The result was 220 votes in favour, 213 against, and one blank vote.

The 'Andaluces' Parade Group thus joins the group of Christian parade groups alongside the 'Maseros', 'Contrabandistas', 'Mozárabes', 'Templarios', and 'Pirates'. They will now be able to participate in the festival alongside all the festival-goers of Mutxamel in the 'Mig Any' events.

For Poveda, "the creation of a new parade group is a source of pride for Mutxamel; the festival is very much alive, and proof of this was the festival-goers who attended the assembly and subsequent vote. For us, it means an increase in festival-goers, which contributes to the growth of the festival. From the Commission of Moors and Christians Festivals, we wish this new parade group the best of luck so that the festival continues to grow."

The 'Andaluces' Parade Group, which will now participate in the 'Mig Any' events, starts with at least 40 adult festival-goers, meeting and even exceeding the minimum requirement as stipulated by the Commission of Festivals' statutes, including all the requirements for the creation of a new parade group, such as an official costume for both women and men.

For Rafael García, mayor of Mutxamel, "the festival family of Mutxamel grows with a new parade group, as agreed upon after the vote last Friday, January 31st. Our Moors and Christians festivals in honour of Our Lady of Loreto have a centuries-old tradition; they are the greatest cultural expression of the municipality, a hallmark, a place of encounter and brotherhood." He also reminded that "we must always seek what unites us and continue working to care for and enhance our festivals," concluding by encouraging the new parade group, "congratulations 'Andaluces'. Forward the Festival of Mutxamel."
