Elon Musk, the world's richest man, has changed his name on the social network X to "Kekius Maximus," sparking various speculations about the reasons behind this decision.
The magnate has not provided any explanation regarding the name or the new profile image, which features the character 'Pepe the Frog,' a meme used by far-right groups, dressed in Roman military attire and holding what appears to be a video game console.
Nonetheless, the move has had repercussions in the cryptocurrency world, causing the value of a memecoin (a digital currency inspired by Internet memes) sharing the same name to soar. It remains unclear whether Musk possesses such crypto assets.
Meanwhile, the name "Kekius" seems to be a Latinisation of "kek," a term referring to 'laughing out loud,' popularised among video game players and often associated with the alt-right.
"Kek" is also the name of the ancient Egyptian god of darkness, sometimes depicted with a frog's head.
Additionally, social media users have linked the nickname "Maximus" to the name of Russell Crowe's character in the film 'Gladiator,' Maximus Decimus Meridius.
