The bishop of the Orihuela-Alicante diocese, Monsignor José Ignacio Munilla, is known for his traditionalist and conservative doctrine. He calls it fidelity. Perhaps, but in other matters, he is quite progressive. It cannot be otherwise when the prelate has not hesitated to use the latest technologies, artificial intelligence and Chat GTP, to prepare what is probably the most important homily of the year. At least, the most popular one.

Neither shy nor hesitant, Munilla has openly admitted to using the AI application for research. A simple question, but very important: "Chat GTP, give me references of Pope Francis on the Holy Face."

A simple query, but one that saved him hundreds of hours searching for documents. Did he get a response? Indeed. The late Supreme Pontiff spoke of the Holy Face in his last encyclical, stating that "through the Holy Face of Jesus, one reaches the heart of Christ."

A Shepherd in the Image of Christ

The Santa Faz Eucharist was entirely dedicated to the memory of Pope Francis, whom Munilla frequently referenced. But also, just days before the cardinals gather under Michelangelo's frescoes in the Sistine Chapel, prayers were offered for a new Pontiff "in the image of Christ," alluding to the enlightenment the Holy Spirit provides to the Church fathers in choosing the new successor of Peter.

A beautiful metaphor that Monsignor Munilla elaborated on by urging the faithful to "see the eyes of others, know the people," and to create community bonds in a society that promotes individualism.

The bishop lamented the current "lack of role models" in society, the "spiritual orphanhood," and the "absence of moral fatherhood." This Thursday, May 1st, is Labour Day, but also St. Joseph the Worker Day. "A father who did not engender," Munilla recalled. Like St. Joseph, "the Church is also responsible for its people," a role it offers.
